3. New Members Drive
From: PYC Membership Committee
To: PYC Keelboat Owners/Skippers
The Membership Committee realise that without the ongoing
recruitment of new sailing members it will be difficult for PYC to
continue in its present form, and indeed to survive in the long term.
To achieve a positive year-on-year growth of at least 10%, we
need to do something tangible, and in fact the Club needs to "invest"
in the recruitment of potential new sailing members.
What we need to do is to provide a mechanism which will enable
interested (novice) persons to experience first hand what its like
to be "on the water", as well as what PYC has to offer.
This is where we need your help. We intend to place advertisements,
in the press over a weekend, inviting interested persons, who may
have thought about sailing, but have not got around to doing anything
about it, to join us over a series of Sundays for trial sailing sessions on
our members' keel boats. If you are willing to participate in the program,
please would you advise the office (Pat) before Friday 16-Feb of the
following:
- Your name
- Boats name and type
- Marina number
- The number of novices you would be able to handle per
session.
- Date(s) (from 3-March) you would be able to accommodate
them. (as many Sundays as possible)
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
The Membership Committee
4. Keeler & Hobie Racing last Sunday
A report from Sundays OOD ~ Chris Sutton
11.02.07
Hi Terry
Bridge crew – Chris Sutton assisted by Wayne and Catherine Naude’.Rescue crew – Cyril and Kerry Foley.Bosun – Terry Hargreaves.
Racing was abandoned today. Only 2 skippers attended the briefing ( Rob Samways & Frank Edwards ) and they agreed that there was little point in setting a course.
Jon Marshall called from the beach site to say that no hobies were rigged.
At 0930 the wind was still gusting at 30 kts but moderated soon after.
5. A1 Grand Prix Weekend
A1 GRAND PRIX WEEKEND
The Creative Events, organisers of the Durban International Boat Show, in association with RNYC; Durban Africa; Cafe Fish; Boating World; Durban Chevrolet; and Mocean Action have arranged Watersport Activities off the Casino Beach to coincide with the A1 Grand Prix. The object is to turn the beach front off Suncoast Casino Beach into a mini Monaco during the running and televising of the A1 Grand Prix, so as to put Durban on the Watersports tourist map.
To this end, two competitions have been organised.
1) The New Cafe Fish Catch & Cook: Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th February 2007. Get your boat out from first light on one or both of the competition days, catch any edible fish and cook it on board. Judging on taste and presentation from 2 pm. Great prizes to be won!
Registration and briefing upstairs at New Cafe Fish, Durban Marina Thursday 22nd @ 18:00. Prizegiving Sunday 25th @ 1700.
Entry fee R100 per boat. Free goody bag and 2 tickets to A1 Grand Prix Friday 23rd per boat.
2) Durban Sailing GP: Sunday 25th February 2007. A fun windward/leeward sailing event - 2 x 1 hour offshore races in four categories - Racing, Cruising, Cats & Dinghies. Prizes in all divisions and spot/lucky draws. Starts at noon - Be there!
Compulsory registration and breakfast briefing session - 10:30am upstairs at New Café Fish - Durban Marina
If you do not fall into either of these categories, still try and get into the water and be filmed for international TV. Lets show the rest of the world that Durban is a great holiday destination and that Durbanites can band together and create something really great.
These events are proudly brought to you by: The New Cafe Fish, Durban Africa, Riviera Boats (Boating World), Durban Chevrolet, The Royal Natal Yacht Club, Creative Events and Mocean Action.
And should you have any queries regarding these events, please contact Chris on : 082-4040 298

9. "Quote/Unquote"
"The America Cup is simply everything; it is business, technology,
psychology, logistics, passion, a lot of passion, frustration, leadership,
seamanship and finally respect, for the elements and your opponents." --
Team leader, Captain Salvatore Sarno, Team Shosholoza
"The America' s Cup is a microcosm of life: People meet, gather and dream of
a better future. Then there is a birth, the beginning of an adventure, then
the years of work, of happy and difficult moments, finally comes maturity
and its questions, are we ready? Can we achieve that? Then it's the big
jump; the races, the fight...Suddenly it's the end. And only one will have
right to eternity, will remain forever in memory, will never be forgotten,
because on the America's Cup his name will appear..." -- Sébastien Col,
helmsman, Areva Challenge
"Everybody has in their life some big dreams; for a sailor the America's Cup
is 'the dream'! Now that I have touched this dream I don't want to wake up
too early - or at least not before our team is able to win. I know it is
really hard but if we cannot believe in our dreams, life becomes very
boring." -- Vasco Vascotto, helmsman, Mascalzone Latino - Capitalia Team

Harbour Licences
News from Rear Commodore Errol Rutherford
Harbour Licences issued by the National Ports Authority to all craft moored on and/or using Durban Bay are due on the 1st April, 2007. Boat owners are requested to collect a "Craft Registration Form" from the Club's Reception Counter, to complete it, and to hand it in at Reception together with a copy of the boat's annual SAS "Certificate of Fitness". These must be received by the Club before 24th February, 2007 to be included in the Club's bulk application for Harbour Licences.
Please ensure that the "Certificate of Fitness" is still in date, i. e. the "Valid until" date is after the 1st April 2007. If the "Certificate of Fitness" has or will expire prior to 1st April, 2007, please contact SAS to arrange for your boat to be re-inspected.
The Harbour fees for 2007/8 have still to be advised. The cost of the Harbour Licence will be charged to members' Club Accounts. Once the Harbour Licence discs have been received, boat owners will be advised by notice in TTP and on the Club Notice Boards, and they can then be collected from Reception.

NOR and Sailing Instructionsand other documentation are available from Sailing KZN and from PYC. This race counts towards the "Blue Water Series".

And who knows, we may even fool the Weatherman and have the good "mid-week weather" for the race!

1. Keeler Racing Report
REPORT ON THE LATEST CLUB RACES.
The following account of the last two events, hosted by RNYC was compiled by their Rear Commodore, Derek Wilkes. Please note Derek's comments regarding marks S1 and E2 being marks of the course.
" Wednesday 31st Jan saw some thirty boats take part with 8 in Division A, 16 Division B, and 6 Division C boats taking part. A word of warning to some of those who do NOT read the sailing instructions the two marks S1 and E2 are marks of the course for all rounds and an amended set of sailing instructions have been issued reflecting this. Be warned the mark laying boat will be stationed on the sandbank side of these marks for all future races and if you sail on the sandbank side of these marks you will be disqualified. I myself watched some “pretty prominent” sailors sail inside S1 last Wednesday.
Sunday’s 'There and Back' was not well attended as the weather report was not encouraging. However four boats presented themselves at the start which started with Frank Edwards (Thermopylae) sailing single handed, hooking the start mark around his rudder. That bit of drama which lasted 40 minutes set the tone for the day as this was followed by good thirty knot gusts and sporadic torrential rain culminating in the rescue boat Scorpio loosing it’s steering somewhere north of the Umgeni River. This resulted in the committee boat having to leave station and go and accompany Scorpio home as she was also using excessive fuel and there was doubt as to the adequacy of the remaining fuel. Driving into 30 to 35 knot winds with horizontal driven large rain drops in an open boat is not my idea of a comfortable Sunday sail/race officer duty in particular considering that the Vice Commodore and I had left our foul weather gear at home.
The highlight of the day was definitely watching Frank Edwards demonstrate his not inconsiderable single handed sailing skills which culminated with a trip over the side lying hove to in 30 knots of breeze, to unwrap the mark mooring line from around the rudder."
2. Manning of Bridge & Rescue Boats
News from Commodore Nigel Milln
Manning of Bridge and Rescue Boats
The manning of Bridge and rescue boats for Wednesday and Sunday Sailing has become an impossibly onerous task from an organisational point of view - so we have come up with a plan which was adopted in the past :
From now on :
1) Bridge and Rescue crews will be provided by the boats participating in the Wednesday / Saturday and Sunday Club Events.
2) A roster will be drawn up providing the :
· Name of the “ Duty” boat
· Name of the Owner
· Date of Duty
3) Trophies will be awarded ( for the series ) at the end of the season on a cumulative points system ( Low points scoring system ) and the boats that have done their “ Duty” will be awarded a First Place Score for the race lost whilst doing Duty.
4) Any boat that either fails to do duty or alternatively fails to arrange a successful alternate – and inform the duty officer – will loose their TWO best scores of the season.
It should be noted that
a) We now have a Bosun - Peter Whittaker who is responsible to see that the Bridge and Rescue Boats are suitable and ready for use at the appropriate time, complete with the Buoys and equipment.
b) Bridge instructions will be on board Husky – they are simplified for Wednesday sailing to EXCLUDE the more difficult duties of Recalls / I Flags etc and are simple enough to follow.
c) If your boat does not have a big enough crew in normal trim to provide enough personnel help will be at hand.
The Duty Roster will be on the Notice Board shortly and Pat will ring you to confirm your particular date.
We need your help to make this work – PLEASE !!
Thank You
Nigel Milln

6. PYC Beach Site
News from Commodore Nigel Milln
Watch this space.- The negotiations regarding the Beach Site and the Proposed Small Craft Harbour are preceding at a pace. Our responsibilities as a Club are becoming more clear and we continue to try to get the best deal that we can for all of us. There will be both good and not so good to come out of this in the end – depending on what your particular needs are – we definitely wont be able to “have our cake – and eat it”, but some will consider that we will get some of the cream.
At the end of January we were supposed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Developer. The deadline date has been postponed long enough for us to call a Special General Meeting to secure approval before we go ahead , and this we will do as soon as the MOU has been modified to our requirements.
The date of the SGM will be published shortly.
On the Main Club Development Issue we are putting a steering committee together to handle this – If any one wants to be on that committee – now is your chance – just let Terry Flynn know !
In reality nothing has been published that we have not known about for some long time – and the procedure will take some long time, so panic is not the order of the day.

11. Fresh Blood Fires Team Spirit
When captain Salvatore Sarno was growing up in southern Italy, he spent
hours sitting at the top of a hill near his home in Salerno trying to catch
a glimpse of the sea 20km away. The young Sarno dreamed of sailing, of one
day becoming the captain of a ship. Now, as chairman of the Durban branch of
the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the diminutive Sarno looks at
Durban Harbour through his office window and dreams of winning the America's
Cup.
Sarno, who arrived in Durban 20 years ago on a ship delivering granite, is
the man behind South Africa's maiden cup challenge Shosholoza. A team who
initially just wanted to bring a piece of Africa to the cup have now set
their sights on a place in the semifinals when the challenger series starts
on April 16. Shosholoza's renewed spirit comes after they put aside their
pledge to remain solely South African and brought experienced Italian
sailors Paolo Cian and Tommaso Chieffi into the afterguard.
They have also given their sleek, rainbow-coloured yacht RSA83 a make-over.
Sarno said the move away from a totally South African crew was a team
decision. "I called a meeting with the crew and asked them whether they
preferred to be 100 per cent South African and continue to sit at the bottom
of the table or be 80 per cent local and win races. "Unanimously they
decided that I could even go to 70 per cent. They were tired of losing after
mistakes made by the afterguard. -- by Julie Ash, New Zealand Herald, full

14. When Less is More
When Team Shosholoza returned from its winter holiday in South Africa, the
sailors were given a new toy to play with. Rather than building a second
boat, however, the South Africans decided to modify RSA 83, the first new
boat built in this Cup cycle. Most observers will credit the team with
having made a good decision. Historically, building a second new boat has
been the downfall of many smaller teams in the modern era of the America’s
Cup. And with current rules allowing a team to change up to 50% of the hull
of a boat, significant modifications can be made without building an
entirely new boat. “We’re happy with one boat to be honest,” says Paul
Standbridge, Sailing Manager of the team. “Small teams that try and do two
boats are the ones that make mistakes. I’m glad we only have one boat with
the size of our organisation. I think RSA 83 was very good to start with and
I think the changes will make it better.” -- Full story:

Hi Terry,
A friend in Melbourne who used to crew for me has converted an old movie he made to DVD and sent me a copy. Twenty-four minutes of really nostalgic stuff showing Flying Fifteens sailing in busters for fun, in calmer winds taking a professional model on a photoshoot, an Easter Regatta (what fantastic fleets we got in those days), the first-ever launch of a Fifteen from the beachsite and the first dinghy offshore series.. The quality and sound are bad but who cares - this was made back in the stone age of home movies!
Do you think this might be a 'draw'card for a 'draw' night or some similar occasion? Anyone who was sailing back when dinghies were first allowed offshore might well recognise themselves in the fleet, and it should certainly be of interest to past PYC Fifteeners and also present ones from whatever Club.

1. Sunset Cruise 27th January 007
This Saturday sees the second Twilight Cruise for all keelers and big cats. The first Sunset Cruise that was held in December was very well supported and this type of event is obviously what is currently enjoyed by sailors that are active. There will also be a braai at the Pool and Thatch area after sailing and the new bridge will again be very well used! Watch the notice board for the format for the Cruise which will be weather dependent
2. Jonnsen Cup
A good turnout of Dinghies and Hobies sailed the Jonnsen Cup last Saturday unfortunately the handicaps were effected by the wind dropping off during the afternoon leaving the Hobies in the distance when the first Laser crossed the finish line The surprise overall winner was Gavin Davies sailing a Laser instead of his super fast Tornado. Well done Gavin. The win was toasted with the normal 'black velvet' served straight from the very impressive Jonnsen Cup.
3. Wednesday Night Sailing ~ 24th Jan 007
This Wednesday is PYC turn to host the Wednesday Fun sail. As usual the start will be at 17h30 and with the brilliant summer weather that we have been experiencing a big fleet is expected. Just a point to remember this is a 'FUN' sail but basic sailing rules do have to be observed to avoid collisions. Don't push your luck on a rule it is just not worth it and with a big fleet on the water be sure to keep a proper lookout.
4. Dinghy Sailing this Saturday
Well from the Sailing Calendar it would appear that the dinghies are having a break for the weekend! So Dinghy sailors why not get a ride on a keel boat for the sunset cruise. If you want a berth let me know and I will try to place you on a yacht.

AIMING HIGH
Africa's first America's Cup hopefuls Team Shosholoza started out with the aim of winning a race or two. Now, despite having the oldest boat in the challengers' series, the South African team has raised their sights and is determined to make this year's semi-finals. "At the beginning of last year we were taking it as it came and hoping to win a few races but now we're in a position where to come fourth, to make the semi-finals, is something in our minds," said skipper Mark Sadler. “It's going to be bloody hard and difficult to get that right but it is a possibility and that's where we're aiming. It started off as an adventure ... but after winning a few races we are a fully fledged America's Cup team. We've achieved more than we expected to already and whatever more we take away is a bonus," Sadler said as the team prepared to travel to Valencia in Spain where the Louis Vuitton Cup - the challengers' elimination series will be held. -- Wendell Roelf, Rueters, http://tinyurl.com/yv72qd

TO THE POINT
eNewsletter of the Point Yacht Club
eNewsletter number 199 ~ 10th January 2007
The PYCs eNewsletter that keeps you fully informed of all club activities on a regular basis.
1. A New Years Message from Commodore Nigel Milln
2007 Is here – I hope it will be happy and prosperous for the members of Point Yacht Club and I hope it will see us all on the water cruising or racing in the way we each most enjoy.
2007 is full of challenges for your committed committees who strive to improve the Club / its facilities and the events that will be staged during the year for the benefit of us all.
My list of “ jobs to be done “ numbers 23 with such challenges as ;
The Beach Site – how best to handle the transition to the new format of a club shared with at least two other clubs – Ski Boat and Undersea – in the uncompromising atmosphere created by the city of Durban who want us there – but only on their terms.
Offshore racing – There is a perception that RNYC wants to take over the Vasco Da Gama race with the help of Sailing KZN who now also claim to own the Mauritius Race – our members don’t agree. We must navigate a passage through this mess – in a way that increases participation in the sport !
We have three main sailing events to organize this year :The Horizon Easter Regatta for Cats and dinghies which promises to be a 100 boat fleet. The July MSC Regatta for Keelboats. The J22 Worlds in December and of course the Clippers will be back in Durban in November and we will be involved there as well.
Junior Sailing / Dinghy Sailing and Keelboat Sailing both inshore and off need a boost and we need to grow our fleets. This is a very real challenge which we need to get stuck in to this year.
Around the Club we have the more mundane problems of the day to day running of the Club which must go on.
Increasing Membership / Improving the Catering / making the Club more user friendly for All including Families and Wives is going to be at the top of the crowded list .
We owe our Club to the dedicated few who are involved in making it all happen and I would like to think that they will have your help and support this year to do whatever they have to for the benefit of us all. If any member has a desire to become more involved – let me know – there is plenty to do !!
Most of all . . . . .. . . . HAVE A HAPPY SAILING 2007 !!!!!!!!
2. Jonnsen Cup
A note from Mike Dixon, the OOD for the Jonnnsen Cup to be sailed this Saturday. Please note that entries must be in by 12h30 for handicap purposes
Hi Terry,
Just a reminder for TTP that the Jonnsen Cup will be sailed on Saturday starting at 2:00 entries must be in by 12:30 as this is a persuit race with a handicaped staggered start. This is a race where the boat, skipper and crew are handicapped so a novice on the same class of boat as a seasoned sailor will receive a better handicap.
Course cards and entry forms are available at PYC reception.
Cheers,
Mike.
3. Wednesday Night Sailing ~ 10th Jan 007
The 2007 season of Wednesday Night Racing will be launched today when PYC will host the first Wednesday sail for 2007. The sailing calendar shows that the Wednesday racing comes to a close before the end of March, so there is less than 3 months left to enjoy the fantastic Durban summer weather out on the bay. Lets all try to make the first Wednesday night sail the biggest yet!! Party at PYC after the sailing.
4. Keeler Racing this Sunday
This Sunday sees tha PYC spring into action with two Offshore Sprint Races with the first start planned for 11h00. This ism open to all Keelboats, Cats and Tri's. Why dont you start the New Year with and Sunday sail?
5. Hobie News from the Shark Doctor
This Saturday 14 January is the Jonssen Cup in the harbour – this is a pursuit race, with boats AND skippers being handicapped, so even novices have a chance. A Hobie won last year for the first time in ages. You will need to be at the PYC main club by about 1230 to register, and you will be allocated a start number. The Cup is filled with black velvet after the event, and is passed around to all competitors to have a dop!
There is also offshore round the cans racing on 22 January.

7. Thought for the Day
If you were arrested for being kind would there be enough evidence to convict you?
8. Louis Vuitton Act 13
NOR
The Notice of Race for Valencia Louis Vuitton Act 13 and the Louis
Vuitton Cup challenger selection series has been released. The Notice of
Race (NOR) is a document issued by the Regatta Director, Dyer Jones,
detailing the conditions for the event. Drawing up the NOR for the Louis
Vuitton Cup required extensive consultation with and contributions from
the Challenger Commission and Principal Race Officer Peter Reggio.
The NOR for the Louis Vuitton Cup contains some interesting points for
America's Cup aficionados:
- The Race Committee intends to conduct racing when the average wind
speed is between seven and 23 knots.
- The race course will be between 8.6 and 12.6 miles, with slightly
longer race courses favored as the Louis Vuitton Cup progresses and
shorter race courses more common on when two races are scheduled on one
day.
- Matches that aren't sailed when originally scheduled (postponed,
abandoned, re-scheduled) will be raced in the next available 'racing
slot' (on a reserve day or as the second race when just one race is
scheduled). This means that as much as practical, the original scheduled
will be maintained and races won't be 'bumped' by re-scheduled matches.
- As per the Valencia Plan for scoring the Louis Vuitton Acts and Louis
Vuitton Cup, the pairing list for the Rounds Robin will be established
based on rankings following Valencia Louis Vuitton Act 13. There is
currently some discussion on establishing the pairing list based on the
current Louis Vuitton Ranking. If the challengers agree to this change,
pairings for the Rounds Robin will be announced early in 2007.
- As with the Louis Vuitton Acts, and previous Louis Vuitton Cups, there
are 'no-change' periods defined from the beginning to the end of each
stage of the regatta. During this period challengers may not make
serious changes to their designated race boat, although minor
modifications are permitted. What is new however, is that challengers
with two eligible race boats, are allowed to substitute their race boat
in the middle of a round, subject to a penalty equal to one race win in
that stage. -- America's Cup website, full story:

9. Auntie Hillies Gossip Corner
Goodday Terry,
On Thursday, January 4, David Collins - son of former Commodore the Late Peter Collins (1979-81) visited the PYC with his wife, 11-year-old son and daughter (9). They've been on holiday from Sydney, Australia, and he brought them to the Club specially so they could all have the "famous PYC pie". Report back was "Excellent!" David is in close touch with Bruce Savage and they still sail competitively against each other. "Doc" and Joliette Savage are well and happy in "Oz". David's contact details are: email davidcollins@pagekirkland.com and www.pagekirkland.com. and they look forward to hearing from PYC members.
Another news item in case you haven't heard it is that Andrew Heathcote is getting married next Saturday

1. PYC Members Scoop the Flying Fifteen Nationals
One of the best kept secrets for 2006 must be that PYC members Richard Bate and Rob Goulden cleaned up the Flying Fifteen National Championships sailed offshore Durban in mid December 2006. Sailing a Flying Fifteen for the first time these 2 Laser sailors came out on top after 6 races sailed in varying conditions. This is even more remarkable as they were sailing an old boat with old sails and Rob was initially a some what 'reluctant crew'. Well done Richard & Rob the 'talent shines through'
2. "Sailor of the Year for 2006"
Congratulations to PYC member Craig Millar for being awarded the "Sailor of the Year 2006" title. Craig came out tops out of the 12 nominations that were made during the 2006 year. See the interview in the latest copy of 'SAILING' magazine
3. Sailing this Weekend
Well it's off to an early start with sailing in 2007 with racing starting this weekend for all classes, the Dinghies, Hobies and Keelers.

Hi GUYs – happy new year etc
There is a longhaul this Sunday 7 January and round the cans racing on 22 January. Lets try and get reasonable numbers on the water to start off 2007. I am not at work this week, but you can call me on my cell if you need 0736484804. Long term warning for Sterkfontein on the 1st weekend in March – we maybe be able to put up a reasonable team against the Vaalies for a change – if all our regulars sail

6. Twilight Cruise & Bridge Opening
The Commodore, Nigel Milln' comments on some recent 'happenings' at the club
TWILIGHT CRUISE / NEW BRIDGE
I am proud to report that we had the help of Sean Jones , Peter Latter, Terry Flynn and Rob Bowman in the repair and refurbishment of the flag pole and the removal and replacement, which by all accounts was quite a job - a-n-d we now have new flags !!
The New Bridge over Lavender Creek is in position and was officially opened and christened with a bottle of Champaign after the Twilight Cruise on Saturday night. Thanks are due to Gavin Smith and last years general committee who finally approved the venture.( I am told it was under debate for three years or so – getting the job Done was the quick part !). Aubrey Brookes was the MC for the occasion and we are going to miss him and Di when they jet off to the Isle of Man later this year. Gavin did the opening speech and Helen and Jan dispensed the champers liberally over the bridge and surrounds – including Gavin and themselves. Sean Holland was there to take photos !
A braai at the thatch / pool area followed and it was great to see a good turnout for the twilight cruise and an even better turnout for the Braai, and Bridge opening. Well done to all concerned ( including all those I have not mentioned by name) and thanks for being there !!
7. Update your EPIRB
Some news from the international scene regarding the upgrade of EPIRBS. (I am not involved with EPIRB'S but members who are say this is relevant information to SA)
UPGRADE YOUR EPIRB!!
If you're still lugging around the most common and least expensive type of Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons, which broadcast in the 121.5/243 MHz range, it's time to replace them. These Class A, B, and S EPIRBs, also called Category B or Mini B, are inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. Their signal has no identification component, and can take up to three or four satellite passes before they can even begin to pinpoint where the distress call is coming from. Frequency congestion in the band used by these devices also causes a high satellite false-alert rate, which means that confirmation of the distress call is required before search and rescue forces can be deployed. Due to these and other drawbacks, it was decided in 2000 that the globe-covering constellation of COSPAS-SARSAT (COSPAS is an acronym for the Russian words Cosmicheskaya Sistyema Poiska Avariynich Sudov which translate to Space System for the Search of Vessels in Distress. SARSAT is an acronym for Search And Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking) satellites would cease listening for 121/243 MHz signals in 2009.
In the United States, the U.S. Coast Guard is getting the public ready for the 2009 deadline by outlawing use of 121.5/243 MHz EPIRBs as of the end of December, 2006.

8. Sydney to Hobart Race
SYDNEY HOBART RACE
(The drama of this classic ocean race unfolded last week while Scuttlebutt
was on holiday break. If you need a good recap of the race, which includes
the maxi dismastings of Maximus and Oakley, and the sinking of Koomooloo,
the following story will do it for you.)
With winds of no more than 20 knots forecast just prior to the start, this
year's Rolex Sydney Hobart was lining up to be a relatively benign event.
But despite a moderate forecast, the world's toughest 'classic 600 mile'
offshore race did not fail to live up to its reputation, with competitors
not only having to survive, but race through one of Mother Nature's most
treacherous obstacle courses, an event which eight years ago claimed the
lives of six sailors.
Seventy-eight yachts took the start line of the 2006 Rolex Sydney Hobart, a
smaller field than previous years, but by no means lacking in quality. While
in 2005 the focus for line honours was the fight between two brand-new 98ft
sisterships Wild Oats XI and Alfa Romeo, this year there were potentially
five boats gunning for line honours - Bob Oatley's Wild Oats XI back to
defend her title, this time against two other 30m supermaxis Charles Brown
and Bill Buckley's Maximus from New Zealand and Grant Wharington's heavily
modified 2003 winner Skandia. Added to the mix were the Volvo Open 70s,
Volvo Ocean Race winner ABN AMRO One and Matt Allen's Ichi Ban (formerly
Grant Wharington's Brunel), 28ft shorter, but no less potent given hard
enough conditions.
Outside of the maxis, some of the hottest competition was to be found in the
50-60ft range where several skippers were lining up for an equally
heavyweight bout with their latest hardware. This included Geoff Ross' brand
new 55 footer Yendys, Stephen Ainsworth's all conquering Loki, the canting
keel Cookson 50s Quantum Sails and Living Doll and Graeme Wood's newly
acquired Nelson Marek 52, Wot Yot. -- Full story:

9. What Were You Doing When You Were Just 14 years old??
FIELD TRIP
Like any 14-year-old schoolboy, Michael Perham has spent the Christmas
holidays reading books, playing his guitar, and doing the dreaded homework.
Remarkably, however, he has done all this on a 28ft boat and is now on the
verge of becoming the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic Ocean
single-handed. After battling waves as high as a house, sailing through
shark infested waters and braving hurricane force winds, Perham, from
Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, is expected to sail into Nelson's Dockyard, a
harbour on the Caribbean island of Antigua on Tuesday morning, some seven
weeks after setting off on the 3,500-mile journey from Gibraltar. -- by Will

Our access control guard will in the future be required to attend also to the security duties on our moorings. He will always remain available though for assistance with visitors etc. by phoning 074-278.3886. The new security system will also be access control hence it will be important to carry the tag with you at all times ! Those not in possession of a tag need to sign the Visitors Book and/or report to the Marina Office for assistance.
7. Twilight Cruise
Hi Terry
Could you please publicise the Twilight cruise in the TTP.
It will take place on Saturday 23 December 2006. Yachts will slip
moorings from about 15:30 for a cruise. If the weather is good, those that
want to can proceed to sea, to return at twilight under the wonderful
lights of Durban.
Braai packs will be available and fires lit.
Thanks
